The Roux en-y Gastric Bypass, still the most commonly performed bariatric surgery in the US, utilizes restriction as well as malabsorption to affect a positive weight loss experience.

Within the first year, one can expect to lose an average of 61.6% of one's excess weight. When patients follow the appropriate dietary and exercise recommendations they can have long-term success with their weight loss. In addition to dramatic weight loss, GBP also has been shown to improve or completely resolve many obesity-related comorbidities, such as Type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. These improvements may decrease the risk of cardiovascular events by reducing many of the risk factors which ultimately lead to cardiovascular disease.

Our partnership with Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital means that your surgery would be performed at centers with state of the art equipment, which enables the performance of the latest procedures in bariatric surgery.

Dr. Long believes that the best patients are educated patients. If you are interested in learning more about bariatric surgery, please take the time to understand the process.

1. Dr. Long asks that all patients attend a free bariatric surgery seminar prior to being evaluated in private consultation. At the informational seminar, Dr. Long explains the procedures, their advantages, disadvantages, and risks. Please contact our office to register for a session today.

2. The next step is to understand if your insurance carrier covers bariatric surgery. Review your specific policy and ask a benefit representative if you have 'coverage for weight loss surgery based on medical necessity.' If they state that you do not, please clarify that there is a direct 'policy exclusion' on the plan. If your insurer denies coverage or states there is a policy exclusion, Dr. Long's office staff will help you understand your options.

3. Once you have attended a seminar and spoken to your insurance company, you should fax or mail the following:

1. Documentation of weight loss attempts within the past 2 years, if any

2. Documentation (doctors’ notes) that you have been morbidly obese for more than 5 years

3. Completed registration forms which you can download here.

You will then be scheduled for a private consultation. Together, you and Dr. Long will discuss and decide on the best surgical option to help you reach your weight and health goals.
